RE: Will Camper drain Truck Battery?

If you have a Chevy or GMC you will eventually drain your truck batt. Mark.

RE: How many rear end failures with TC's

Your TC had nothing to do with your bad bearings. It's just guilty by association. Mark.

RE: battery ??

I have a single Optima blue top that is now about 4 years old. Still doing it's job. But while my camper is always plugged in, I always use the disconnect switch, after a day or two. If it's been more than three or four weeks, I connect it for a day or two again. Mark.

RE: Ordering truck with 2nd battery under hood-Good idea??

vanbikehorse
I don't think that anything has changed from my 2000, but as hard as it is to believe, with the camper connected you are drawing from the starting batt. and not the aux. batt. I found this out on my first trip, and drained my batts. with the fridge on 12 volts while stopped to sleep in a rest area. A the time I thought the isolater was bad, and had drained all three. The correct operation was explained to me by the Dealership tech. This tech had a 5er, so he knew 1st hand .
Once I understood the draw of the fridge, and the propane operation I've not done this since. I have a large deep cycle Optima, and with the main batt. I've run the furnace all night in 15* weather with no problem.
Also the design of my truck wont let me use a taller batt. and still close the hood. Mark.

RE: Ordering truck with 2nd battery under hood-Good idea??

I have a 2000 silverado with the 2 battery option. On my truck {not positive but I think yours is the same} the second batt. only comes into play with the key on. This was for the high ele. demand of plow pumps and similar things.
With your camper connected, and the ignition off you would be drawing from the camper batt. and the starting batt. The only way to use all three is to rewire the second batt.
Also the second batt. doesn't help out with starting. But I does let you jump start yourself. I hope this helps. Mark.

I saw the same setup, only with an Olds Toronado. This was at the RV show in Cleveland Oh, maybe mid 70's. Held on by the drip rails. Mark.

RE: 2800# on 3/4 ton?

Bill, based on your weights and my own experience, I'm 5710# on the rear, you should have no tire problems. My truck has 72,000 on it, and about 50,000 with the camper. Recently completed a trip to Alaska. We turned around at the Arctic Circle on the Dalton Highway. 12,200 miles total. The only problem was my old aux. battery went bad. Too many frost heaves I think. I will add I've never gone more than 4 years on my rear tires, no matter how much tread is left. Mark.

I wonder if the current manuals are up, to the torque output, of the latest deisels. This could be the reason. Mark.

RE: "Pounds/$" Picking The Best?

To a point, I think you can apply that reasoning to a TC. But there are some very lite campers that people speak highly of, that you can't compare to a higher end unit. Mark.

RE: 2800# on 3/4 ton?

Bill, because my rear weight was under the 6084lb limit of my 245-75E tires, I have continued to use this size. I don't wait till my tires are worn out to replace them though. I went 38,000 on the OEM Steeltex's. My replacements were Michelin LTX-MS in the same size. At 22,000 miles I put new ones on the rear before going to Alaska. I had no tire problems on the trip at all. Maine is great, we have been there 4 times, and will definatly go back. Mark.

RE: 2800# on 3/4 ton?

Bill, I have a 2000 Silverado 2500 ext-cab 4x4 with a 6.0 gasser, and a 920 Lance. I have installed Air-Lift bags and Rancho Shocks. The Lance sticker says 2789lbs with water and propane. Our second trip, fully loaded for 2 weeks to Maine, gas tank nearly full some firewood and both of us in the truck, the weights were 9810 lbs. 4100 frt and 5710 rear. This is on a 8600 GVWR. The truck and camper were new together. I'm now just short of 73,000 miles total, which is about 50-55K with the camper. This includes a 12,200 mile trip to Alaska this summer. I have had Zero problems with this combo. Your only problem will be your rear tire weight. Mark.

RE: Found my airbag leak, comments please?

8 Years and 60,000 miles on my first set of Air-Lifts, never any leaks. Replaced them only because of age, before going to Alaska this summer. 12,000 + miles without leaks. Mark.

RE: Help! Looking at new Silverback Fifth Wheel

Howard- you have to do what's comfortable for you. But that being said , there are probably tens of thousands of trucks out there that people have exceeded the rated cargo capacity. Very, very few have had or seen an accident, structual or mechanical problems caused by this. You wil not have to worry about being over your axle rating, and I don't think you'll be over your tire capacity. A lot of truck camper people exceed thier cargo capacity without any ill effects.Mark.

RE: Help! Looking at new Silverback Fifth Wheel

I don't own a 5er but I do own a truck camper. Don't let the wieght police scare you. As long as you don't exceed your rear tire capacity, you have more than enough truck to safely pull the trailer your talking about. However you might benefit from airbags and better shocks. Mark.
